A couple of the cheeky SEO tricks I've 'realised'...

• for a non-commercial site, with a geographic leaning, add to the relevant Wikipedia page.
• for a small company with small competitors, use your competitor's name as site keywords and Google Adwords keywords

Well, as the competitor has better web coverage at the moment, having us pop up incidentally next to them is better than not popping up at all!
