BACKLINKS, think of these like other sites that have your link in on their site as if they are VOTING for your site and giving it credibility. Google tracks every single backlink that your site has and calcualtes how many so called VOTES your site has…This forum is a great way to build up these backlinks with other website owners who use this forum.

Personally I have found forum posting, blog commenting and link exchanges to be the most effective but its getting harder and harder to get decent backlinks.

It is always best to get as many links as you can as google report them different than yahoo and bing sees different figures.

For example yahoo see only 5 links on my website, google see 483.

Also some forums link differently and that in some part is directly conected to how that forum has its SEO.

So just get your self out there and make as many links as you can

I find google see less links than yahoo at least thats my experience up to now.

Are backlinks essentially links that are exchanged between sites? How do you increase your google ranking in organic search results?

Yes, as far as I understand it back links are links exchanged between sites. But there more valuable if say for instance you have 2 sites A & B and the peson you are linking to has 2 sites C & D, but A links to C, but C links to B, B would link to D but D wouild link to A (think Ive got this right and you don't need to have 2 sites just the person you are linking with) as they become one way links which are worth more. Another thing you should do (and I'm guilty of not doing) is keeping your links related to your site, because apparently thats better. Try http://www.uklinkexchange.co.uk and start exchanging. Who knows how page rank is sorted - google and the rest are a law unto themselves.
